There are quite a few travel sites out there, so which one should you use? In the past some people would visit multiple sites, compare prices, and buy tickets at the one that offered the best deal. Eventually, sites like Kayak came along, which allows you to compare prices from multiple travel sites. Many people use Kayak, believing that is the easiest way to get the best deals. There are even commercials about Kayak, all claiming that Kayak can save you not just money, but a lot of time you may other wise spend comparing rates at various travel sites on your own.
Although the concept may seen intriguing, we don’t believe you have to use sites like Kayak at all, and here is why. Not long ago, many of the better travel sites like Travelocity figured out the only way they can stay competitive is by offering the lowest prices possible. The result? Sites like Travelocity now offer low price guarantees, whereby if you find a better price at another site, they will refund you the difference. It goes without saying that these sites would not offer such a guarantee unless they were very confident they could live up to their end of the bargain. If they aren’t able to deliver the lowest prices all of the time, they would end up with a customer service nightmare where they have to constantly send refunds to people.
We put Travel Comparison Sites to the Test – And Here are the Results:
We selected a random hotel in Las Vegas on a random date, so we could compare prices offered by Kayak, Orbitz, and Travelocity, just to see if there is any difference in the prices you will get. The hotel we selected was Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, and the date was February 12th, 2012. Here are the results.
- Travelocity Price: $87
- Orbitz Price; $87
- Lowest Price on Kayak: $87
Just in case this was a fluke, we did second test of another hotel in another location. This time, we chose the Hilton at Oakland Airport, CA. Here are the results of the second test:
- Travelocity Price: $82
- Orbitz Price: $134
- Lowest Price on Kayak: $134
In this second test, Travelocity had prices that were lower than any of the sites listed on Kayak. You might be interested to know that Travelocity is not even included in the Kayak search, so even if you use a comparison site with Kayak, you still have a problem in that such sites do not include all travel sites in their search. Therefore, to be 100% sure you are getting the lowest price, you would still have to cross check the prices you find on Kayak with other travel sites, such as Travelocity.
To be fair, two price quotes are not enough to draw any definitive conclusions. But our opinion remains that as long as you find a reputable travel site that offers a low price guarantee, you can simply stick to using that site, and be relatively confident that you will be getting the best deal out there the majority of the time.
